Glamorgan

Sophia Gardens, the home of Glamorgan County Cricket Club on the west bank of the river Taff is a pleasant tree-lined ground.

The cricket ground was named after Sophia, the wife of the city's Marquess and when she became concerned about the limited amount of open space in the bustling industrial centre of Cardiff this historic cricket ground was born.

Glamorgan County Cricket Club was founded in 1888. Based in Cardiff it plays most of it's home games at Sophia Gardens. It is the only first-class cricket team in Wales.

Glamorgan famously won the county championship under the captaincy of Wilf Wooler in 1948. Glamorgan won the championship again under Tony Lewis in 1969 and Mathew Maynard in 1997.
