The Ford County Ground, Chelmsford

The formation of the present club happened in Brentwood in 1876. Some six years later the County headquarters were transferred to Leyton, as Brentwood was considered too remote from London, and by 1894 Essex was granted first-class status by the MCC in its Classification of Counties. Well over half a century went by before the Club acquired the present site in Chelmsford in 1966.

Essex first won the County Championship and the Benson & Hedges Cup in 1979.
