Surrey have admitted defeat in their attempts to bring India off-spinner Harbhajan Singh back to England this summer.
The 29-year-old has previously played for both Lancashire and Surrey, but is unable to return due to his international commitments.
Surrey managing director, Gus McKay, told the club's official website: "Following this decision, we began the search for a replacement.
"We can confirm discussions have taken place with a number of players about a short-team deal, including the Pakistan left-arm seamer Sohail Tanvir.
"However, despite recent reports in the Pakistan media, a deal has yet to be concluded."
