De Wet to make way for Steyn

Dec 24 2009 - 10:12:10

South Africa skipper Graeme Smith has confirmed that Dale Steyn will replace Friedel de Wet for the second Test match against England, as long as he shakes off a hamstring injury.

Steyn missed the draw at Centurion in the opening Test, with debutant de Wet impressing in taking five wickets in a match which the Proteas almost won on a tense final afternoon.

However, Smith told reporters: "It was terrific to see Friedel bowl that well, but the three guys who have had the job over the last period of time have been really successful at it.

"Makhaya Ntini brings a lot of experience to our attack. He maybe didn't bowl as well as he would have liked in Centurion, but he's a guy I really support and he has been integral through my captaincy.

"So I really back him to come through and bowl well in this Test.

"Morne Morkel brings some variety to the attack with his pace and bounce and it was great to see Friedel bowl well, but if Dale is fit I think it will be a straight swap."
