Worcestershire land Gayle

Worcestershire have announced that they have signed West Indies batsman Chris Gayle for the closing weeks of the season.

They moved for Gayle after all-rounder Zander de Bruyn was selected for the South Africa 'A' squad to tour Sri Lanka.

The 25-year-old Jamaican will make his debut in the Totesport League game against Lancashire Lightning on August 24 and will be available for a total of five one-day and four County Championship matches.

The left-hander averages 39.38 in a 52-Test career, which has seen him score seven centuries - including a memorable 317 against South Africa earlier in the year.

Gayle is also a useful off-spinner, with 38 Test and 100 one-day international wickets to his name.
