Warne misses maiden ton

England and Simon Jones made short work of the Australia tail on day four of the third Test, bowling the tourists out for 302 to secure a first-innings lead of 142.

Shane Warne had helped Australia avoid the follow-on as the tourists moved on to 264-7 after a rain-interrupted third day, but his bid to reach a maiden Test century was ended on 90 by Jones.

Warne had added 12 to his overnight score when he pulled a short ball from Jones into the hands of the waiting Ashley Giles on the deep mid-wicket boundary.

He had hit ten fours and two sixes in a superb 122-ball innings.

Brett Lee managed just one from 16 balls, before Jones struck again as the Aussie fast bowler nicked a length ball and Marcus Trescothick took an excellent catch diving to his left at first slip.

The obdurate Jason Gillespie briefly broke out of his shell to hoist Jones for six over square leg, but was trapped leg before wicket soon after for 26 to leave the Glamorgan paceman with Test best figures of 6-53.

On Saturday, only 14 overs of play had been possible, with England wicketkeeper Geraint Jones missing a simple catch and an easy stumping opportunity to end Warne's resistance.
