Vaughan passed fit for duty

England captain Michael Vaughan has been passed fit for the second Test against Australia at Edgbaston after suffering an elbow injury during practice on Tuesday.

Vaughan was struck on the right elbow by a ball from Hampshire paceman Chris Tremlett and was taken to hospital for an x-ray, which revealed severe bruising but no fracture.

However, he was able to net against Steve Harmison and Ashley Giles on Wednesday morning and will be fit to face Australia.

Meanwhile, the ECB have confirmed that Kevin Pietersen has been handed a summer contract running until the end of the season to become the 13th Centrally Contracted player.

Chairman of selectors David Graveney confirmed: "By following up an outstanding one-day international tour of South Africa with impressive performances in the NatWest one-day international programme, Kevin forced his way into the Test side.

"He fully deserves being upgraded to Central Contract status."
