Thorpe calls it a day
England batsman Graham Thorpe has announced his retirement from international cricket with immediate effect, having been left out of the squad for the First Test against Australia.
Thorpe had missed out on a place for the latest Ashes series to debutant Kevin Pietersen, who marked his bow with a knock of 57 at Lord's.
The 35-year-old Surrey left-hander has played exactly 100 Tests for England, becoming only the eighth man to do so during the recent meeting with Bangladesh at Chester-le-Street.
In total he made 6,744 runs at an average of 44.66, including 16 centuries and 39 half-centuries during a career that started with a second innings century against Australia on debut at Trent Bridge in July 1993.
His top score of 200 came in March 2002 in the First Test against New Zealand at the Jade Stadium in Christchurch.
Thorpe also played in 82 one-day internationals, scoring 2380 runs at 37.18, including 21 half-centuries but no 100s.
Chairman of selectors David Graveney paid tribute to Thorpe's efforts, saying: "Graham was one of the leading players of his generation and that is reflected by the fact that he has collected 100 caps.
"He will be remembered as a tenacious batsman who served England with great ability and great pride."
