Stewart praise for Thorpe

Former England captain Alec Stewart has paid tribute to former Test colleague Graham Thorpe, who has announced his retirement from international cricket.

The 35-year-old Surrey left-hander played exactly 100 Tests for England, before missing out on a place for the latest Ashes series to debutant Kevin Pietersen.

In total he made 6,744 runs at an average of 44.66, including 16 centuries and 39 half-centuries, playing for much of his career alongside his Surrey team-mate Stewart.

"He was never going to tour so he effectively announced his retirement without saying it at the start of the summer when he said he was going to Australia," said Stewart.

"He has been a great player and servant for England and since he came back from his injury a few years ago his performances have been fantastic.

"When Graham Thorpe is fit and playing well then he has been a nailed-on certainty to play for England, but now he has announced his retirement the team has to move on.

"I first saw Graham play when he was just 17 and had just joined the Surrey staff and I have seen him mature into a superb cricketer over the years."
