Sidebottom shines for England

A superb spell of bowling by Ryan Sidebottom has put England in control of the third Test against New Zealand.

The Nottinghamshire star took seven wickets on the second day in Napier as the Black Caps were dismissed for 168 after being 103-1 at one stage.

England lost the last three wickets of their innings within the first half-hour of the day to be all out for 253 as Tim Southee finished with five wickets on his Test debut.

It appeared to be a poor total on what is traditionally a fine batting wicket and appeared even worse when Stephen Fleming (59) helped the hosts make a solid start.

But Sidebottom (7-47), ably supported by Stuart Broad (3-54), had other ideas as New Zealand lost their last nine wickets for 65 runs with Daniel Vettori (14) being only the third player reach double figures.

England built on their 85-run first innings lead despite Michael Vaughan's early departure.

Alastair Cook was dismissed for 40 but out-of-form Andrew Strauss (40 not out) and first-innings centurion Kevin Pietersen, unbeaten on seven, were still there at the close as England reached 91-2 as they continued their unlikely attempt to clinch a series win.
