Pietersen rescues England
A century from Kevin Pietersen on day one in Napier kept England in the third Test against New Zealand.
Pietersen was dismissed just before the close of play for 129, his 11th Test century, but England only reached a miserable 240-7.
After winning the toss and electing to bat first, England made a disastrous start as they were reduced to 4-3, with skipper Michael Vaughan (2) first to go as he was trapped leg before by debutant Tim Southee.
Andrew Strauss went for a duck, caught low down in the slips by Jamie How off the impressive Southee, before Alastair Cook (2) dragged a Chris Martin delivery on to his stumps.
In was 36-4 when Ian Bell gave another debut maker, Grant Elliott, his first Test scalp, departing for nine, made from 58 deliveries faced.
Pietersen was then joined by Paul Collingwood (30) and the pair added 89 for the fifth wicket, before the latter fell to the off-spin of Jeetan Patel.
Tim Ambrose made just 11 before he became Patel's second victim of the day, before Pietersen brought up his hundred, reached off 163 balls and including ten boundaries.
However, Southee was to have the final word on the day, as Pietersen edged the youngster to How at gully and departed for 129, spanning 208 deliveries and including 12 fours and a six.
Stuart Broad added valuable runs up to the close to be unbeaten on an impressive 42, with Ryan Sidebottom three not out.
