Pietersen leads a fightback

Australia took just under an hour to wrap up the England tail, bowling the home side out for 155 on the morning of the second day of the First Test at Lord's.

England had skittled the tourists out for 190 on the first day, before being reduced to 92-7 at the close of play.

Debutant Kevin Pietersen was unbeaten on 29 as play got underway at an overcast Lord's, but his new partner Matthew Hoggard lasted 16 balls without troubling the scorer before being undone by Shane Warne.

The leg-spinner was grateful to first slip Matthew Hayden, who held on to the rebound after getting in the way of an attempted cut shot by the England fast bowler.

Pietersen took that as his cue to attack, hitting a six and two fours off Glenn McGrath to reach 50 in his maiden test innings.

Warne was smeared into the stand next over by Pietersen, but had his revenge with the following ball as the England man tried to repeat the trick and fell to a superb diving catch in the deep by Damien Martyn.

However, just as Australia looked like wrapping things up, Simon Jones and Steve Harmison launched a late onslaught.

Jones bashed three fours in an unbeaten 20, while Harmison made 11 before holing out to Martyn off Brett Lee.

That left Australia with a first-innings lead of 35.
