Pakistan on top in second Test

Pakistan enjoyed the best of the first day of the second Test against India in Faisalabad, reaching 379-4 at the close of play.

Following the high-scoring but uncompetitive draw in the first Test in Lahore, hopes were high that the fanatical crowd would witness cricket of a more exciting nature in the second of the three-match series.

However, the bat dominated once more as Younis Khan (83) and Mohammad Yousuf (65) built a solid platform, before captain Inzamam-ul-Haq, who is unbeaten on 79, and the hard-hitting Shahid Afridi (85 not out) put together an unbroken fifth-wicket stand of 163.

Things started well for the tourists, as debutant Rudra Pratap Singh claimed the wicket of Shoaib Malik for just 19.

Zaheer Khan then removed the dangerous Salman Butt for 37 and at 62-2 the Indians held the upper hand.

But the pitch once again proved to have few demons and the impressive Pakistan batting line-up gorged themselves on India's bowlers.

Coming together after Singh had removed Yousuf with the score on 216, Afridi and his skipper played sensibly before accelerating towards the end of the day's play, with Afridi taking 20 from one Irfan Pathan over as he moved to 85 from just 84 deliveries.

Singh was the pick of the India bowlers, with the 20-year-old returning figures of 3-77 on another difficult day for Rahul Dravid's men.
