Moores: England on top

Coach Peter Moores believes England ended the first day of the second Test against New Zealand on top.

Tim Ambrose and Paul Collingwood's unbeaten 155-run partnership in Wellington helped the tourists fight back from a top-order slump to end that day on 291-5.

"Partnerships, as always, have been the key to games of cricket because they take the momentum away from the opposition," admitted Moores.

"They've done that in that last session and put us in a very strong position.

"Halfway through the afternoon session when we were under pressure and they bowled well, to come out with that still five down on a wicket that has done a bit all day as well is a pretty good position."

Referring to wicket-keeper Ambrose's unbeaten innings of 97, he added: "He played really nice, really nice.

"What was nice today was that he has worked very hard at getting into the ball."
