McGrath fires Aussie assault

The First Ashes Test started in astonishing fashion as England skittled Australia out for 190 at Lord's, before being reduced to 92-7 at the close of play on the first day.

Having won the toss and chosen to bat Ricky Ponting's side made an assured start before Matthew Hoggard bowled Matthew Hayden.

That opened the floodgates, with Ponting making just nine before being caught in the slips off Steve Harmison, while Justin Langer was caught by the Durham paceman off Andrew Flintoff for what turned out to be the top score of 40.

Damien Martyn and Michael Clarke made little impression, before Simon Katich engineered a mini-revival, getting solid support from Adam Gilchrist and Shane Warne.

However Harmison returned to blow away the tail and end the innings with 5-43, with Simon Jones and Flintoff both taking two wickets apiece.

Hopes of England domination lasted until tea, but straight after the resumption Glenn McGrath took the spotlight, removing Marcus Trescothick for his 500th Test wicket of an illustrious career.

The veteran paceman continued to reek havoc, getting rid of Andrew Strauss, Michael Vaughan, Ian Bell and Flintoff to leave England reeling on 21-5.

The day's only 50 partnership stopped the rot, with Geraint Jones making a confident 30 before being undone by a quick bouncer by Brett Lee.

Debutant Kevin Pietersen remained resolute to be unbeaten on 29 at the close of play, but England suffered one further blow from the final ball of the day as Ashley Giles trod on his stumps getting out of the way of another Lee rocket.

That left England still trailing by 98 runs with just three first inning wickets in tact.
