McCullum leads fightback
A superb Brendon McCullum innings helped New Zealand close the first day of the first Test at Lord's on 208-6.
The Black Caps batsman hit 13 fours and two sixes in his 97 at a rate of a run a ball before being bowled by Monty Panesar after adding 99 runs with Jacob Oram for the sixth wicket.
The partnership revived the tourists who had struggled before tea as they limped to 109-5.
Rain in the capital meant there was no play possible before lunch at the start of the three-Test series.
However, after Michael Vaughan had won the toss, the England captain was quick to insert New Zealand in conditions conducive for his bowling attack.
The impressive James Anderson was first to strike in the second over of the day, forcing Aaron Redmond to depart for a duck when the debutant edged a ball low to Alastair Cook at third slip.
The Lancashire bowler then had James Marshall caught behind off a no-ball, before Jamie How (7) nicked a simple catch to wicketkeeper Tim Ambrose to leave the tourists on 18-2.
Ross Taylor (19) rode his luck before lofting a Stuart Broad ball to Paul Collingwood whose safe pair of hands left New Zealand in dire straits on 41-3.
Marshall was eventually dismissed for 24 when he prodded a Broad ball to Andrew Strauss at first slip and, just before tea, Daniel Flynn's first Test innings ended when Anderson bowled him for nine.
After McCullum's assault, Oram moved on to a comparatively steady 23 not out at the close while Daniel Vettori was still there, unbeaten on five.
