Hayden returns to form

Matthew Hayden grabbed a superb 150 as Australia used their match against Essex as batting practice in their preparations for the final Ashes Test.

Essex had declared on their overnight 502-4 at Chelmsford as the Aussie bowlers toiled on a perfect batting strip.

When the tourists batted they also found it easy going as openers Hayden and Justin Langer helped them race to 244-1 at lunch.

They posted a first-wicket partnership of 213 in only 33 overs before Langer pushed forward to a delivery from off-spinner James Middlebrook and edged the ball into the hands of Alastair Cook at slip.

Hayden retired on his lunch score of 150 but Simon Katich weighed in with 72 and Brad Hodge blasted a quickfire 166.

However, Adam Gilchrist again failed with the bat as he was out for eight but the match petered out into a draw with Australia ending the match on 561-6 after only 95 overs.
