Giles hits out at critics

England left-arm spinner Ashley Giles has reacted angrily to criticism of him and his team following the 239-run defeat to Australia in the First Ashes Test of the summer.

Giles and several of his colleagues came in for heavy flak following the loss at Lord's and the Warwickshire ace was less than impressed by what he had read.

He told The Daily Mail: "It feels like a lot of ex-players don't want us to win the Ashes, because they didn't or because they were the last people to do it.

"That might sound bitter, but that's the way it feels.

"It's at times like that when you think 'If this is what people think, bugger them. I am fighting a losing battle here'.

"But then the other part of you says 'Sod them, I'll get on with it'.

"There is quite a bit of anger and defiance among us. We have to stick together as a team, harness the feelings and say 'I'll show them'.

"Michael Vaughan has taken a lot of flak, so has Geraint Jones, so have I. We expected some if we lost, but there has been an amazing amount of stuff hitting the fan."
