Bishop only played 13 Championship matches for the county while Clarke has been sidelined this season with an ankle injury.

Bishop's best figures came in 2001 when he took 5-148 against Leicestershire at Chelmsford in 2001.

Clarke played a key role in Essex's run to the Benson and Hedges Cup Final three years ago, taking 3-13 in the semi-final win over Worcestershire at Chelmsford.

Essex chief executive David East said: "It is always very disappointing when we have to release players.
