England build big lead

England are 270 runs in front of Australia after reaching 128-2 in their second innings at tea on day four of the third Test at Old Trafford.

England were 26 without loss at lunch, with Andrew Strauss having survived an edge off Brett Lee that flew between Shane Warne and Ricky Ponting in the slips.

After the resumption Marcus Trescothick played fluently to extend the lead, but fell for 41 with the score on 64, seeing a defensive stroke off Glenn McGrath dislodge his off bail.

Skipper Michael Vaughan made 14 before he top-edged a pull off Lee to sub fielder Brad Hodge at deep fine leg.

Strauss responded to his early let-off to be 57 not out at tea, a knock that has included six fours and a pulled six off Lee.

Ian Bell is unbeaten on eight.

Earlier, Simon Jones had made short work of the Australia tail during the first hour of play, helping dismiss the tourists for 302 in their first innings.

Shane Warne's bid to reach a maiden Test century was ended on 90 by when he pulled a short ball from Jones into the hands of the waiting Ashley Giles on the deep mid-wicket boundary.

He had hit ten fours and two sixes in a superb 122-ball innings.

Lee managed just one from 16 balls, before Jones struck again as the Aussie fast bowler nicked a length ball and Trescothick took an excellent catch diving to his left at first slip.

The obdurate Jason Gillespie briefly broke out of his shell to hoist Jones for six over square leg, but was trapped leg before wicket soon after for 26 to leave the Glamorgan paceman with Test best figures of 6-53.
