Derbyshire were denied by rain after looking set for victory in their LV= County Championship Division Two clash with Essex at Derby.
Wes Durston's 90 not out helped them to 202 for six, only 22 runs away from a second Championship win of the season with 10.5 overs left, when a downpour ended what had been an excellent contest.
Northamptonshire are set to complete an easy win over Gloucestershire at Bristol.
The hosts were bowled out for 288 in their first innings, a deficit of 269, with Jack Brooks taking four for 54 and Will Gidman making 116 not out, his maiden first-class century.
The same two players were to the fore when Gloucestershire followed on, Brooks claiming three for 43 and Gidman scoring 76 not out in a total of 248 for eight. Jon Lewis made 59.
Despite Gidman's heroic efforts, his side go into the final day still 21 runs behind and will probably require some assistance from the weather if they are to save the match. Northamptonshire amassed 557 in their first innings.
