Cook states his case
Young England star Alastair Cook is hoping to continue the fine form he has shown so far in his fledgling Test career.
The 21-year-old Essex left-hander marked his Test debut with a century in the winter in India and added an impressive 89 on his first appearance at home against Sri Lanka at Lord's.
Cook said: "I think I've shown a lot of people that I can perform at this level on a regular basis and that my century in Nagpur wasn't a fluke.
"I'll be taking a lot of confidence from the way I batted during this match and hopefully build on that.
"I would have loved to score a century in my first Test at Lord's but it wasn't to be. I can, however, take a number of positives from my performance."
Cook also added praise of the system that has allowed him to move easily onto the international stage.
"That's testament to the system the England and Wales Cricket Board have put in place," Cook added.
"International cricket is all about coping with pressure and pitting your skills against the world's best players.
"It makes a huge difference, especially for the younger players, that you have team-mates around you that you've known and have played alongside for years."
