Boycs backing for Pietersen

Former England legend Geoffrey Boycott believes that Kevin Pietersen benefited from his time spent with Shane Warne at Hampshire earlier this season.

The Australian leg-spinner tormented England's top order during the convincing First Test win at Lord's, while debutant Pietersen notched two half-centuries and played his former county colleague with confidence.

Boycott told BBC Radio Five Live: "Pietersen batted beautifully. Maybe he's lucky, he plays at Hampshire with Warne and maybe he's played against him in the nets.

"Maybe Shane Warne hasn't bowled all his types of delivery at him, but I'm sure he's bowled some of them and when he's been bowling in matches, Pietersen's been able to watch his hand.

"If you watched the way Pietersen played and the other players played against Shane Warne, it's clear Pietersen has a huge advantage and played him very well."

Boycott also gave words of advice to Pietersen's England team-mates, adding: "I am aware that whatever you watch on television isn't quite like being in the middle, so you need to spend a little time playing him.

"But it does help if you've seen video and you've got a reasonably good idea what he's bowling."
