Ambrose leads fightback

Tim Ambrose helped England recover from a collapse on day one of the second Test against New Zealand.

The wicket-keeper was unbeaten on 97 as England ended the first day in Wellington on 291-5.

New Zealand had won the toss and opted to put England - who lost the first Test in dramatic fashion ? into bat.

Ambrose and Paul Collingwood (48 n.o) put together an unbroken stand of 155 as England recovered from the loss of five wickets within a 57-run period.

It had looked good for the tourists when openers Alastair Cook and Michael Vaughan ended the first session with their wickets intact.

But Vaughan (32) was bowled by Jacob Oram in the second delivery after lunch before Cook (44) followed suit soon after.

Andrew Strauss scored just eight before being caught in the covers off the bowling of Kyle Mills, while Kevin Pietersen (31) once again got in only to lose his wicket when Mark Gillespie took out his off stump.

Ian Bell was dropped by Brendon McCullum before the wicket-keeper made amends to catch him off the bowling of Chris Martin for just 11.

But with England's backs against the wall, Ambrose and Collingwood arrived at the crease and steadied the ship as the tourists ended the first day back in the ascendancy.
